Elements in the Story
Alliteration: An example of alliteration is "No Dane doubted the victory," because of the repetition of d in the middle this example appears at the moment in the book when Beowulf wins the fight against Grendel. Another example of alliteration is "of ivory and iron and wood" this appears when Beowulf is fighting Grendel and Herot the mead hall is being described as being very strong.
Allusion: An example of allusion in the poem is "Then he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy Sword, hammered by giants," this quot is allusion because the giants are not directly in this poem but they are alluded to when the poem is talking about the sword in Grendel's mother lair.
Catastrophe: An example of catastrophe in Beowulf is when Beowulf was fighting the dragon and was killed in the process.
Dramatic irony: An example of dramatic irony is when Beowulf was killed by the dragon this is dramatic irony because no one was expecting that he would die while fighting the dragon.
Mood: This poem had many different moods in the beginning of the story the mood was dark because it was talking about how Grendel was killing everyone. In the middle of the story the mood was heroic and very tense as Beowulf arrived and started fighting Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. The mood at the end of the story was very solemn and sad as Beowulf is being killed by the dragon and when he dies and they are talking about his memorial.
Reversal: An example of reversal is when Beowulf was fighting Grendel's mother in her lair and is pined down and is very close to being defeated but at the moment he finds a magical sword made by giants and turns the tides of the fight and defeats Grendel's mother.
Tragic irony: An example of tragic irony is when Beowulf is killed by the dragon, This is an example of tragic irony because Beowulf told everyone that he would fight the dragon and save them but then ended up getting himself killed but not without taking the dragon with him.
